is on the fiscal cliff. washington has less than 48 hours to make a deal before billions in tax increases and spending cuts take effect. senate negotiators stayed late into the night trying to work out a plan that would pass a vote. both houses of congress would convene later this afternoon in a rare sunday session. in his weekly address, the president took his message directly to the public calling for congress to come together to pass a deal. >> for the past couple months, i have been working with people in both parties with the help of business leaders and ordinary americans to come together around a plan to grow the economy and shrink our deficits. it's a balance plan. one that would protect the middle class, cut spending in a responsible way and ask the wealthiest americans to pay a little more. and i'll keep working with anybody who's serious about getting a comprehensive plan like this done because it's the right thing to do for our economic growth. but we're now at the point where in just a couple of days the law says that every american's tax rates are going up. every american's

you, dana. the clock is ticking, 12 hours before we hit that fiscal cliff deadline. if a deal is not reached, how is it going to affect us? the tax policy center crunched numbers. here's a couple scenario. if you're single with no kids and you make $50,000 a year, you you see your taxes go up by $1500. now, take a married couple with two kids making $100,000. they would see their taxes go up $5300 a year. i want to turn to christine patrolman m romans in new york to talk about the people that are really, really going to feel this immediately and it's going to have the greatest impact. who are they? >> the first people to feel it are on extended federal unemployment benefits. for them, for 2 million of them suzanne, on december 29th, that was the end of the last week of unemployment benefits for them. so immediately hundreds of dollars a week of unemployment benefits go away. for everyone else, anybody who works at a company and pays payroll taxes, your taxes will rise. it looks like that will happen no matter what. your pay dhek will be p smaller no matter what because the pay

. >>> in the meantime, it is what everybody is talking about, the fiscal cliff deadline. in just one hour leaders from both sides of the aisle are scheduled for a sitdown and pow wow with president obama. our eamon javers is there. can we expect the best? >> everybody is certainly talking about it but there are not a whole lot of people who know what will happen here. the sliver of hope is the consensus expectation in watching ton is that the president might lay down an offer for a small deal, some type of extension of the bush tax cut for those under 250 or maybe on up to $400,000 if that's where negotiations take him. and then throw in a bunch of other cats and dogs like, for example, an extension of unemployment insurance for those people whose unemployment insurance is going to run out. a couple of other items and call that a deal. that may be where we're headed here, but we simply don't noah head of this meeting, which is now just about 55 minutes away. meanwhile, here in washington at least one republican senator took the opportunity today to say all of this rests at the feet of the president. t
